Sun Day is a day of action to celebrate the power of clean energy. Culminating on September 21st, people across the nation will showcase solar installations, electric homes and electric vehicles. By organizing over 500 events nationwide on the fall Equinox, Sun Day will help accelerate the ongoing clean energy revolution: we have technology and solutions, all we need is to build the political will to scale-up and accelerate clean energy and make it accessible to all.
A dozen community members from Madison, WI interested in solar attended the open house which showcased Ms. Millar’s solar and all-electric 90-year-old-home. Susan recounted to those in attendance how she converted an older single-family home with a forced hot-air heating system, a gas water heater, and a gas stovetop from gas and electric to electric only. She did that with a 90-year old house on the near west side of Madison. And because it took a fair amount of time, she was eager to share the process she used.
The steps included improved insulation, installation of solar panels, an induction stove, air-source heat pump, and air-source water heater. Then came the day when she called the local utility and asked them to turn off the gas. Her story included facts and figures and detailed records of the various investments made, how her energy costs declined from when the house was gas and electric to now when it is all electric. To illustrate the savings derived from being all-electric, Susan noted that her total electricity bill (lights, air-source heat pump, air-source water heater, induction stove dishwasher and charging her EV) for September 2025 was a negative $13.51.
