POWER UP! Working with WA Utilities to Replace Natural Gas with Equitable Renewable Energy

Power Up Communities Third ActThe Power Up! team engaged with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) in April to provide input on the rulemaking that will drive Washington’s largest electric and gas utility, Puget Sound Energy, to replace its gas service with electric and other renewable heating sources. This rulemaking is a requirement of the recently passed HB 1589, for which we advocated. Power Up! members met with UTC staff to discuss how we can participate, and we are preparing responses for specific issues the UTC requested input on.

Power Up! is continuing our engagement with Puget Sound Energy’s planning process during public meetings, advocating for increasing renewable power and equity. In April, we began identifying Third Act members in areas served by other UTC-regulated utilities so that we can share what we’ve learned from our Puget Sound experience and boost similar advocacy in other parts of the state. We’re also exploring ways to engage with publicly owned (not UTC-regulated) utilities.

We hope more Third Act members will join us in accelerating equitable renewable energy adoption. We need help keeping up with trends and ideas for the needed transformations in how we use energy, and adding voices to critique the status quo and demand changes, in writing and in person. These are interesting times for utility-scale energy, with many uncertainties and hurdles to overcome. Contact Chris Goelz or Tom Kraemer for more info.
