Advancing Fossil-Free Financing: Pressuring Costco & WA State Pension Funds

Costco Clean Up Your Credit CardLet’s Turn Up the Heat at Costco Corporate Headquarters!

The Summer of Heat is heating up! A nationwide coalition, including Third Act leadership from the NYC Working Group, is organizing  thirteen weeks of sustained disruption for Wall Street financiers bankrolling the coal, oil and gas companies that are burning our planet. In the words of Frederick Douglass: “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will.”  We are ready to demand that banks stop funding fossil fuels.

Third Act nationwide is just one partner in the Summer of Heat coalition. To learn more about the NYC 13-week campaign, attend the Summer of Heat’s national informational launch call on May 30.

We have work to do to bring this heat back to Costco corporate headquarters in Issaquah, WA, and remind Costco’s CEO that we’re calling on Costco to cut ties with Citibank if Citi won’t clean up its fossil fuel portfolio. It’s time to remind Costco that we’re in this fight for the long haul and their co-branded Citi credit card is going to become a liability with shoppers who care about the planet.

Third Act working groups in Washington and Oregon are working together to organize a day of direct action in Issaquah during the Summer of Heat. Are you in? Want to help? If you just want to learn more and get in on the planning, and for sure if you’d like to be part of the action in Issaquah, join us on our first Zoom planning call or email Anne Shields for more information. Please RSVP here for our Tuesday, June 4, 4:30 PM call!

WA Public Pension Funds Bankroll the Climate Crisis!

It is important for the WSIB to hear from pension holders and taxpayers that we oppose funding of additional fossil fuel projects and want the Board to take climate financial risk seriously. Please email your comments to recep@sib.wa.gov by June 19 in advance of the June 20 WSIB meeting.

The Washington State Investment Board (WSIB) continues to invest a sizable portion of its funds in fossil fuel – over $8 billion directly in 2021, including funding for the Tacoma LNG (liquified natural gas) plant despite the community’s strongly expressed opposition.

TAWA and Divest Washington are meeting with state legislators to discuss successful strategies for divestment legislation. We’re learning how the Divest Oregon Coalition, including Third Act Oregon, was able to achieve a historic win this year in the passage of the COAL Act.

Help Us Keep Up the Pressure on Costco to Clean Up its Credit Card

Costco may be a great place to stock up on peanut butter or get a good deal on some outdoor furniture, but we all know its partnership with one of the dirtiest of the dirty banks is not a good investment. We’ve got several ways to keep reminding Costco that contributing to the climate crisis is unacceptable:

  1. Flood Costco’s feedback form! Follow the simple instructions here.
  2. Sign and share the petition here to tell Costco to drop Citi as its credit card issuer if Citi doesn’t clean up its act.
  3. Collect petition signatures in person at farmers’ markets or tabling at summer events and TAWA’s Costco campaign team can help you with their submission. Have a little fun masquerading as a Costco sample giver!
  4. Stay tuned for news about our Costco postcard campaign!
