The first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970 – 56 years ago! The seminal observance reportedly inspired 20 million Americans — at the time, 10% of the total population of the United States — to take to the streets, parks and auditoriums to protest the impacts of 150 years of industrial development which had left a growing legacy of serious human health impacts.
The need to take action to protect our Earth has become more urgent than ever. Third Act SoCal will participate in many events planned throughout April. Look for our members tabling or showcasing sustainable features at the events below. And, if you’d like to help us table, email tasc-tabling@googlegroups.com. You’ll be helping to expand our membership and inform the public about the actions we’re taking while spending quality in-person time with other Third Actors.
- April 11: Third Act SoCal is once again partnering with Plug In America to spotlight EVs in Whittier. This time, we’ll have an “electric avenue” of various electric vehicles (plus free refreshments and gift-cards) at a big, free Earth Day celebration put on by the L.A. County Sanitation Districts. Bring the kids and grandkids for earth-friendly arts and crafts, face painting, magic shows and music as well as over 50 green exhibitors. - April 18: Thousand Oaks Community Center will host the community’s annual Arbor Earth Day Celebration.
- April 21: Cal State Dominguez Hills will host its 19th annual Earth Day Festival with activities from 30-plus organizations.
- April 24 & 25: What better way to celebrate Earth Day than with a Climate Dance Party? Taking place locally in San Diego and Los Angeles, these are part of Ayana Elizabeth Johnson’s West Coast book tour for “What If We Get It Right? Visions of Climate Futures.” April 24 at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego; April 25, La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. - April 26: The Unitarian Universalist Church Long Beach will host a talk on “Faith, Stewardship & The Climate Crisis: How Religion Shapes Environmental Action.”
- May 3: The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Santa Monica will host a Green Living Fair.(Rescheduled from April 12)
