The Polluters Pay Superfund Act may not be up for a vote this year, but, like many other climate groups, Third Act SoCal continues to build support for the legislation with hopes for a return.
Last year, we met with legislators, attended rallies in target legislators’ districts and submitted comments at public meetings. Then, in late January, as part of a National Week of Action on climate legislation, Third Act SoCal co-sponsored a panel discussion on Make Polluters Pay, as it’s commonly called. The event, held in Long Beach, was organized by 350 South Bay LA and 350 Legislative Alliance with support from Sunrise LA, Sunrise Long Beach, LA Forward, and Climate Action California.
The panel included a staff member from state Sen. Lena Gonzalez’s office; a resident who experienced tremendous loss after last year’s Altadena fires; a legislative affairs manager for California Environmental Voters; an educator active with union organizing; and a climate and environmental health advocate from Physicians for Social Responsibility. The panel was moderated by an organizer from Food & Water Watch who has been working with many of us to get Make Polluters Pay passed.
