Hundreds of dedicated activists are moving their money to align with their values. Third Act SoCal's blog series highlights members who’ve made the move. Read their stories and resources so you can move your money, too!
Each interview asks four questions:
- Why was it important for you to divest your personal finances?
- What was the hardest moment in the “move your money” process and how did you overcome it?
- What pleasantly surprised you about this experience?
- What piece of advice would you give to someone considering switching?
Monona’s Story
My daughter (who is in her thirties) works with ecological restoration and is a climate activist. For her birthday, she asked our family to move our money from the Big 4 Dirty Banks to a bank that was not investing in fossil fuels. She gave us a list of banks we could think about switching to.
Monica’s Story
As an environmentalist, I think that it is important to reflect that in all aspects of my life.
Phil’s Story
I was pleasantly surprised by how understanding and supportive the representative at my old bank was when I explained why I was closing my accounts and moving my money. He promised to convey my message to people up the chain of command.
Rodney’s Story
I realized that I didn’t need to continue to fund these unhelpful investments by proxy; I could move our money to banks with uses for our money that align with our values. This was revelatory; suddenly, I felt that I had some power and could affect small but significant change!
Geri’s Story
It is a false choice to pit personal security against collective action. Everyone needs to first take care of the basics for self and family, but even that can be put to the cause when combined with others with like values.
