Move Your Money

Stop the money pipeline to fossil fuel companies and align your money with your values to fund local businesses, community development, and the buildout of renewable energy.

Since Third Act was founded in 2021, we have advocated that big financial institutions stop funding the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure, such as fracked gas, oil and gas pipelines and Liquid Natural Gas terminals.

Today that advocacy extends beyond fossil fuels to include stopping the financing of hyperscale data centers and projects that contribute to human rights violations, including detention centers.

Third Act coordinates campaigns  through strategic partnerships with Stop The Money Pipeline, Rainforest Action Network and Fossil Free Media, among others.

While we continue to advocate that the mega-banks, big insurance companies, and retirement and pension funds stop funding fossil fuel projects, Third Act hosts an interactive on-line learning series every month on how we can take individual action to prevent our bank deposits, credit cards, home/auto insurance premiums, and investments from being used to finance the fossil fuel industry… and instead fund local businesses, community development, and the buildout of renewable energy.

The Align Your Money With Your Values learning series is the second Monday of each month at 4:00 ET / 1:00 PT — check the Third Act Events page for the exact date, topic and Zoom link.

Do you know what your money is supporting?

Where you choose to bank, insure, and invest are some of the biggest environmental choices you make. In fact, where you put your money has a bigger impact on your carbon footprint than pretty much everything else you do. That is because the mega-banks, big insurance companies, and large investment asset managers use your money to fund oil, coal, and gas projects.

  • Banking: If you bank with Chase, Citi, Bank of America, Wells Fargo or another mega-bank, some of your money is likely being used to fund companies causing climate destruction. Learn how to find credit unions and community banks that use your deposits to fund local businesses, solar projects and farms, build local housing, and invest in your community… and not fossil fuel projects.  Simply put: Shop Local – Eat Local – Bank Local.
  • Credit Cards: If you have a credit card with one of the mega-banks, the transaction fees, annual fees, and interest on debt also feed the money pipeline to finance fossil fuel companies.  Learn how to find an alternative credit card.
  • Property Insurance: If you insure your home and/or auto with Liberty Mutual, Travelers, All-State, GEICO, State Farm or other major insurance companies, then some of your premium payment is likely being used to both insure and finance the excavation, production and distribution of oil, tar sands, coal and gas.  Learn how to find mutual insurance companies that do not insure nor finance fossil fuel projects.
  • Investments: Large asset managers – companies that people pay to manage and invest their money – such as BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street, and Capital Group are the among the largest shareholders in fossil fuel companies on behalf of their clients.  Learn about the mutual funds you are now investing in and how to find alternative investments… and learn how to find a financial advisor that shares your values.

Explore the actions, blogs, resources, and events below on this page to find financial service providers that align with your values, meet your needs, and are better for the planet. There are directories of service providers, how to’s, FAQs, and webinars to help you.

Frequently Asked Questions

All credit unions do not finance fossil fuel projects. To find out what your bank does with your money go to Mighty Deposits, an independent, women-owned platform working to increase transparency in banking. Their guide analyses public data so you can see what any bank loans your money to. Link here.

The key to finding a responsible credit card is to find a credit union or community bank that issues the card. This may be as close as where you bank now – or you may need to do some more looking to find a responsible credit card.

Green America and Third Act developed a Responsible Credit Card Guide that lists the best options for obtaining a responsible credit card issued by a credit union or community bank, along with other options. Link here

Finding alternatives to the big national insurance companies that are insuring and/or funding fossil fuel companies has not been a simple task because – until now – there has not been a directory to find local and regional mutual insurance companies that are contributing the least possible into the money pipeline to fossil fuels and climate chaos.

Green America and Third Act developed a Climate Smart Insurance Directory that offers suggestions for which insurance companies to obtain quotes from through an independent insurance agent or directly on-line. Link here.

Note: Consider contacting two or three local independent insurance agents, as each agent works with different companies.

Fossil Free Funds analyzes the fossil fuel exposure of mutual funds and exchange traded funds. They make it easy to know what you own, so you can align your investments with your values. Link here.

Pension funds are also key players in the financial system and many older Americans, including Third Act supporters, do not want their retirement savings to be used to finance climate destruction. We anticipate collaborating with other organizations working on pension fund divestment and lending support where we can. You can learn more from campaigns like TIAA-Divest, Divest-NY Teachers, and Fossil Free California, among others.
