Maine made great progress on sustainable energy in its short legislative session in 2026. Third Act Mainers, in partnership with other organizations, helped by lobbying at the State House, calling their representatives, and testifying before various committees in person and in writing. We are proud of our role in making gains!
- Make Polluters Pay (LD 1870). Money was appropriated for a study to calculate the cost of damages in Maine caused by the greenhouse gases by the largest fossil fuel corporations. Next year, we will work hard to enact legislation for corporations to reimburse our state for these costs.
- Plug-in solar (LD 1730). With some of the highest electricity costs in the country, Mainers are eager to reduce their energy bills. This legislation will make small plug-in (balcony) solar panels accessible for all Maine residents, homeowners, and renters alike.
- Renewable energy (LD 1949). This multifaceted bill provides incentives for renewable energy in commercial and residential buildings, sets aggressive targets for reducing fossil fuel emissions, and seeks to enhance public transportation. It also contains a provision to promote education on sustainability practices.
- Tribal sovereignty (LD 785). While falling short of granting full sovereignty for the Wabanaki Confederation, this law inches closer by providing tax exemptions and representation for tribal nations.
Third Act Maine celebrates these wins, and we are looking forward to continued progress in the next legislative session.
