PORTLAND, MAINE – Electric vehicles on display, live music and art projects for all ages, food trucks, informational tables, and a parade led by the Ideal Maine Social Aid and Sanctuary Band, will all be happening at Lincoln Park on Sunday, September 21 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Four organizations planned this celebratory event: Sierra Club, Maine Climate Action Now, A Climate to Thrive, and Third Act Maine. We’re sending the clear message: we have the tools to power our communities with clean energy and overwhelming public support to do it. What we need now is for politicians to wake up, catch up, and help us turn it on.
This event is part of Sun Day, a groundbreaking nationwide mobilization that marks this pivotal moment in America’s clean energy transformation. Spearheaded by renowned environmental activist Bill McKibben, Sun Day features hundreds of events across all 50 states, creating a powerful, coordinated day of action to spotlight the significant energy revolution happening right now. Clean energy is not a far-off dream. It is a readily available, practical set of solutions to our current energy challenges that will bring down costs and improve reliability of our power grid. According to Sun Day organizers, the United States added 50 gigawatts of solar power to the grid in 2024 – the most any energy source has added in two decades – enough to power 8.5 million homes.
“For decades we’ve called this stuff ‘alternative energy.’ We want to drive home the point that that’s not true any more–this is the straightforward, common-sense, obvious way to power our future, the cheapest way to drive down electric prices, the easiest way to build a working America,” said McKibben.
With his new book, Here Comes the Sun, and dozens of prior publications, he is bringing global attention to our climate crisis and the potential of renewable energy.
Here in Maine, “it is great to come together to celebrate the sun as a power source that is ever more affordable and so clean and green,” says Molly Schen, co-facilitator of Third Act Maine. “On this day, we’re welcoming everyone to the Sun Day fair with a joyful spirit, with art and music, and information for everyone seeking to live more affordably and sustainably.”
