Banking on our Future Pledges Third Act delivered thousands of pledges to the CEOs of Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo in February 2023 asking the banks to quit fossil fuels or they would quit the banks. We, the undersigned individuals—both potential future customers and current customers of Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo—are asking your banks to stop investing in fossil fuel companies and projects responsible for the climate crisis. We are gravely concerned that Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo are bankrolling fossil fuel projects that are contributing to climate change that is wreaking havoc to communities around the globe and risking the health, safety, and security of current and coming generations. The thousands and thousands of pledge signers come from all 50 states. More than 75% of the signers are long-time customers of one or more of your banks, having held an account for an average of about 20 years (of those reporting how long they’ve had accounts with your banks, with a range of 2 – 50 years). These pledge signers – who also include younger people – represent literally hundreds of millions of dollars of business, current and potential future. Our Pledge: “If Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and/or Wells Fargo are still using our money to fund the exploration, expansion, and development of climate-destroying fossil fuel projects beyond March 1, 2023, the undersigned customers pledge to close our accounts and cut up our credit cards. If non-accountholders don’t bank with these four banks now, the undersigned potential customers pledge that we won’t do so in the future. We are collectively pledging to move our accounts out of your banks, if we are customers, and to do business with more environmentally and socially conscious banks and financial service providers, including checking, savings, and/or credit cards. Together, current and potential future customers alike, we represent enormous business with your banks. Our request, and our hope, is that Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo will reform your lending and investment practices and that we may continue to be your customers or become your customers. Until then, we are unwilling to have our resources fund climate destruction. Move your money, or we will move ours. Cut it out on climate, or we will cut-up our credit cards and cut our ties.
